SUMMER CAMP ADMINISTRATION

Mrs. Lori Warren is in her tenth year as the Guidance Counselor and Summer Camp Director at Saint Pius X School.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Master of Science degree in Community Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) as well as a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).   In addition to being a full-time employee of Saint Pius X School, she serves as an individual, group and family therapist in private practice in downtown Greensboro.  She is looking forward to a fantastic summer!

Miss Andrea Matkins is in her ninth year working with SPX Summer Camps and is serving as Assistant Camp Director for the third year.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Master of Education degree from Greensboro College.  Miss Matkins is licensed to teach children in grades K-6 and gifted children in grades K-12.  Miss Matkins teaches 4th grade at Northern Elementary School.  As Assistant Director, she will help Mrs. Warren with the daily management of the camp program.  Miss Matkins’ goal each summer has been to ensure every child participating in camp has an exciting, safe and fun summer while also obtaining enrichment during the camp week.  She will now use that goal to help Mrs. Warren maintain the best summer camp program in Greensboro!

SUMMER CAMP STAFF

Miss Katie Anderson is a second grade teacher assistant at Saint Pius X School.  She is a graduate of Elon University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Communications.  She is looking forward to pursuing her Master of Education degree in the near future.  Miss Anderson enjoys working with children of all ages and loves working at Saint Pius.  She is looking forward to seeing you at camps this summer!

Mrs. Christine Bond is a graduate of Appalachian State University where she was a recipient of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship.  With a major in elementary education and a social studies concentration, she enjoys making reading come alive through history in her classroom.  She is also completing her licensure to teach Advanced Learners.  She teaches a third and fourth grade combination class at Shadybrook Elementary.  This is Mrs. Bond’s third year teaching SPX camps and she looks forward to seeing you at the Detectives, Princess and Hawaiian Beach Party camps!

Ms. Elizabeth Bradshaw has a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from North Carolina A&T State University and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She is a fourth grade teacher at Southwest Elementary School and enjoys being creative and creating delicious snacks.  This is her third year at SPX Summer Camps and she looks forward to working with your child at the Fashion Runway, Sweet Tooth, and Show Stopper camps this year!

Mrs. Cathy Brown is the Director of Irving Park Preschool, where she has been employed for the past 15 years.  She also directs the Saint Pius X Extended Day Program.  She has volunteered in the Guilford County School System for the past 20 years as well as for the Boy Scouts when her son was younger.  Mrs. Brown has taught Faith Formation at Saint Pius X Catholic Church for ten years and is in her fifth year of running summer camps at SPX.  She plans on having a fun-filled summer!

Mrs. Lynn Brunhuber has been an assistant teacher at St. Pius for 18 years.  She leads the Young at Art program that teaches art to kindergarten through third students.  She enjoys working with students of all ages.  Mrs. Brunhuber has taught numerous students in various media for many years.  She particularly enjoys teaching oil painting to middle school students.  With a background in Advertising Art and Design she worked for the J.C.Penney Co and various Ad agencies for many years.  Since then she has acquired experience in floral design, interior decorating, hand-painted furniture and various arts and crafts.  Mrs.Brunhuber is able to instill her love of art in all dimensions to her students.  She uses positive reinforcement to build confidence and help children discover their own innate creative abilities which she believes all children possess.

Mrs. Laura Collins teaches Kindergarten at Saint Pius X School and has taught 6th grade and resource in the past.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education K-6 and Reading K-12 from East Carolina University.  Along with her teaching experience she has coached high school cheerleading competition teams, cheerleading camps, and the JV cheerleaders at Saint Pius X.  She loves working with children and having fun!  Mrs. Collins is excited to be part of the summer camp program again this year.

Mrs. Terry Drosback has been employed as a teacher assistant at Saint Pius X School for the past 16 years.  She assisted in 2nd and 5th grades before assisting for the past 10 years in 4th grade.  She also worked as an assistant at last year's summer camps and after care.  She is the mother of three grown children.  She enjoys reading, arts and crafts and working with children of all ages.  Come join Mrs. Drosback's "Up, Up and Away" camp for high high-flying adventure!

Coach Sarah Graves has been teaching summer camps for many years and is excited and thrilled to be working again this summer.  Coach Graves lives in Wilmington, NC and teaches elementary physical education.  She is the head Varsity Women’s basketball coach at Topsail High School.  Sarah will be organizing basketball camps to teach campers about the game of basketball and fundamental skills needed to excel.  She will also design a games camp for campers to challenge their minds and bodies.  Sarah loves the beach, exercise and spending time with her family. 

Mrs. Lucinda Hernandez is the Physical Education Teacher Assistant for Saint Pius X School.  She has been an employee of Saint Pius X for the past six years, where she has served as a teacher assistant in 2nd grade, 5th grade, Middle School, Spanish, and Physical Education.  She has been a teacher and assistant for SPX Summer Camps for the past six years and is excited about running camps again this summer!

Mrs. Denise Jones is the Director and four-year old teacher at Irving Park United Methodist Church Preschool where she has been employed for the past eighteen years.  She is also an After School Care assistant at St. Pius X School. She has volunteered for many years in Guilford County Schools and enjoys children of all ages.  This is her third year at SPX Summer Camps.  She is so excited to be working with your children again this summer!

Miss Holly Navarro is a sophomore in the Williams College of Business at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She has had over eight years of cheerleading experience.  It all began when she started cheering for the St. Pius Comets in the fifth grade until eighth grade. She went on to cheer for the Bishop McGuinness Villains Varsity squad and was the cheerleading captain her senior year.  She has enjoyed working as a SPX Summer Camp assistant in various summer camps, including cheerleading camps, since 2004.

Ms. Mary Ann Parah is the art teacher at Page High School, and a practicing artist herself. She teaches Advanced Placement Art, IB Art, and various other levels of high school art. Many of her students have gone on to attend great art schools.  Ms. Parah is looking forward to running art camps at SPX Summer Camps again this summer.  She has a lot of great ideas for developing art skills and looks forward to sharing her knowledge with her campers.  

Coach Jennifer Powell graduated from Rockingham County Senior High School in 1995 where she lettered in four sports all four years, earning sixteen varsity letters.  Her jerseys were retired and now hang in the commons area of the school.  She went on to play basketball at Greensboro College, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.  She was welcomed back to her old high school, where she currently teaches Physical Education and Health.  Coach Powell is currently the head coach of the Varsity Girl’s Tennis team at Rockingham County High School.  She was awarded Coach of the Year for the 2008 season.  Coach Powell loves teaching sports and health, and is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the All Sports Camp again this summer!

Ms. Laura Sexton has been an employee at Saint Pius X School for the past eight years.  She currently serves as the full-time Teacher Assistant in Mrs. Cotton’s first grade class.  She enjoys reading, art and dancing.  This will be Ms. Sexton’s seventh year teaching at SPX Summer Camps.  She is very creative, fun, and energetic, and enjoys working with children of all ages.  Join Ms. Sexton for a supersonic summer!

Mrs. Chrissy Verchick is the Varsity Boys Soccer Coach at Saint Pius X School.  She teaches painting classes after school, has lead the Young at Art program and is currently an assistant teacher in second grade.  She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She has three children and can't wait to be a part of the SPX Summer Camp program this year!

Coach Robert Youtz is in his fifth season as the Bishop McGuinness Varsity Track and Cross Country coach.   He was named NW Conference Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, & 2009 and lead BMHS to the 2008 state championship title.  Prior to coaching at BMHS, Coach Youtz ran track and cross-country for Mount Union College in Ohio and after served as assistant track and long distance coach at Tuslaw High School in Massilon, Ohio.  He has a B.A. in Sociology from Mount Union College and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Walden University.  Coach Youtz is currently completing his certification in Elementary Education.  He is excited to be joining the staff at SPX Summer Camps this year and is looking forward to meeting everyone at camp!
